FOLC is a grassroots organization, organized in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina gave special priority to rethinking the New Orleans landscape. Membership in FOLC is open to all who support its mission:
OUR MISSION
The Friends of Lafitte Corridor seeks to preserve the open space of the
Lafitte Corridor from the French Quarter to Canal Boulevard by advocating and facilitating the creation of a greenway with bicycling and pedestrian paths
linking neighborhoods, cultural features, historic sites, retail areas and public spaces.
OUR VISION
We envision a completed public trail through the Lafitte Corridor which:
-
links neighborhoods from Treme to Lakeview;
-
provides a safe path of travel for individuals and families between homes, schools, businesses and community resources;
-
increases transportation options, especially for people who do not have access to a car;
-
provides useful community space to be shaped and used by the residents of neighborhoods adjacent to the Corridor;
-
enhances recreational opportunites for all residents and visitors including the elderly and disabled;
- demonstrates best practices in sustainability; and
-
educates visitors about the cultural and economic history of New Orleans and the city's relationship to the larger landscape
FOLC's 1st Board of Directors was elected on December 16th, 2006.
